Technology's Impact on Society: Can Robot Substitute Human Companionship?
SESSION #13 - CAN ROBOT SUBSTITUTE HUMAN COMPANIONSHIP?
ROBOT&FRANK (Jake Schreier - 2012)
Director Jake Schreier pictures a sweet and tender drama set "in a near future" that actually does not look far at all, and questions the impact of fast technological development on daily life.
Robot & Frank is the story of an ageing man, growing old and developing dementia. His family purchased for him a robot programmed to provide him with therapeutic care: the man is reluctant, but it soon becomes a faithful companion. Frank, the main carachter, has a criminal past and the robot lacks any discernment between right or wrong, which leads the two of them to cooperate to finalize their heists.
The robot ends up doing all it can to preserve Frank, who, as well, is at peace with his deteriorating human condition.
"A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. "
- Isaac Asimov's First Law of Robotics: 1942
