Technology's Impact on Society: How does Ideology shape Technology
SESSION #16 - HOW DOES IDEOLOGY SHAPE TECHNOLOGY
Agora (Alejandro Amenábar - 2009)
Director Alejandro Amenábar sets up an historical fiction in the Roman Egypt to highlight the relationship between religion and science. In the story told in the movie, the decline of Greco-Roman polytheism and the Christianization of the Roman Empire are the two sides behind the struggle to save classical knowledge from a religious driven distruction.
Agora's main carachter is the historical figure of Hypatia, a mathematician, philosopher and astronomer in late 4th-century Roman Egypt, who investigates the flaws of the geocentric Ptolemaic system and the heliocentric model that challenges it.
"I went to see Agora expecting an epic with swords, sandals and sex. I found swords and sandals, some unexpected opinions about sex, and a great deal more"
- Roger Ebert
