Technology's Impact on Society: How Much Game Does a Good Life Need?
SESSION #4 - HOW MUCH GAME DOES A GOOD LIFE NEED?
EXISTENZ (David Cronenberg - 1999)
Director David Cronenberg highlights the blurry line between real and unreal in this movie that envisioned the potential of VR technology and video game industry, raising questions about the hidden nature and drives that makes us more and more addicted to this kind of entertainment.
The future pictured by Existenz does not feel far, and yet not completely real. It is the effect of a game that becomes too real, but at the same time life is experienced like a game: reality and virtual reality become indistinguishable.
Chaos, confusion and spiritual doubt fill in this narration, where good and bad are as switchable as real and unreal, to the extent that going back to the "real reality" is perceived as a threath, and almost becomes the topic for what actually is an horror movie of millenial times.
"I'm feeling disconnected with my real life. I actually think there is a level of psychosis involved here"
Within what limit is healthy to break social rules in an artificial reality?
Let's join the course session and try to give an answer to these questions.
