Technology's Impact on Society: Is Immortality Desirable?
SESSION #11 - IS IMMORTALITY DESIRABLE?
MR. NOBODY (Jaco Van Dormael - 2009)
Director Jaco Van Dormael brings into action a science fiction movie that pictures a World where humanity has achieved one of its oldest dream: immortality.
Mr Nobody, the character giving the name to the movie, is the last man on Earth who is going to die. The World wants to record his story, but searching through his memory a multiple scenario comes out in contradictory tales. Everything is narrowed down to a single moment during his childhood that would have inevitably had an impact on the development of his life.
Immortality is a device for the movie to tell us a story about the power of free will. Using immortality provides infinite choices, but is also something that takes out power from the choices we make. In the end living forever might be a conflict with natural regeneration
"The complexity of what makes a choice impossible is perhaps because, every time you make a choice, there is an infinity of possibilities"
- Jaco Van Dormael
If being finite is a defining feature of Life, would Immortality make us other than human?
