Technology's Impact on Society: Technology and Power
SESSION #15 - TECHNOLOGY AND POWER
1984 (Michael Radford - 1984)
Director Michael Radford brought to movie screens one of the most impactful books ever written: George Orwell's 1984. In the dystopian World created by the British writer a totalitarian super-state strictly rules and controls every aspect of both the public and the private lives of its citizens.
1984 is the story of one of those citizens, Winston Smith. The movie is not able to portray the complex picture that Orwell had made of this futuristic version of socialism in the 40's. It was probably impossible to dramatize. The personal parable of Smith, rise and fall of his seek for individualism, instead, is pretty accurate and hits the guts.
Even in the transposition, the omnipresence of the totalitarian regime is pictured by the total control over media and, above all, by the ability to use computer and electronic surveillance systems to the extent that not only actions, but even thoughts stay under the control of the Big Brother.
The decision to make a movie out of the novel in the same year narrated in the book was received as a sort of warning on the direction the American society was taking in terms of monitoring people's life. Almost 40 years later tools have already overcome fantasies.
"Who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past"
